What to Expect in Your Child’s First Class

Hey there, El Dorado Hills parents! I’m Gary Merlo, owner of West Coast World Martial Arts. I’ve seen hundreds of kids walk through our doors for their very first lesson. Some come in ready to take on the world, while others are hiding behind their parent's legs, unsure of what’s about to happen.

If you’re feeling a little nervous about your child starting martial arts, let me tell you right now: that’s completely normal. We know that as a parent, you want to make sure your child is in a safe, supportive environment where they can grow. Whether you’re looking at starting your martial arts training basics or you just want a fun after-school activity, the first class is the most important step.

In this guide, I’m going to walk you through exactly what happens when you step onto our mats so you can feel confident and prepared.

1. The Warm Welcome (and a Little Bit of Bowing)

When you first arrive at West Coast World Martial Arts, you’ll notice a "vibe" that’s a mix of high energy and deep respect. The first thing your child will learn isn't a kick or a punch, it’s how to show respect.

In martial arts, we use "bowing" as a way to say hello and show that we are ready to learn. It’s a simple gesture that sets the tone for everything else. We’ll introduce your child to the instructors and maybe a few of the other kids. Our goal is to make them feel like part of the family from the second they step inside.

2. Preparation: What Should They Wear?

For the first class, don't worry about having a full uniform (what we call a "Gi") just yet. We usually recommend comfortable athletic clothes, think leggings, sweats, or shorts and a t-shirt. Most of our training is done barefoot, which helps kids develop better balance and grip on the mats.

We suggest arriving about 10-15 minutes early. This gives your child time to look around, see the "big kids" or instructors training, and get comfortable with the sounds and sights of the dojo. It’s also a great time for us to answer any quick questions you might have about our comprehensive martial arts training manual or class schedules.

3. The Structure: Building a Foundation

The first class is designed to be a "win" for your child. We aren't going to throw them into a sparring match! Instead, we focus on foundational movements that build gross motor skills.

Research shows that around the age of 6 or 7, children are going through a massive physical and cognitive shift. They are learning to follow 2-3 step directions and improving their coordination, like balancing on one foot or jumping with control. Our first-class curriculum is built specifically to meet them where they are.

What a typical first session looks like:

  • The Warm-Up: Fun, high-energy movements like jumping jacks, bear crawls, or "ninja" stretches.

  • The Lesson: A basic technique, like a "Front Kick" or a "Palm Strike." We break it down into tiny, manageable steps.

  • Focus Drills: We might use focus pads to help them understand where to aim their energy.

4. Why We Focus on "Focus"

One of the biggest questions parents ask is, "Will this make my child aggressive?" The answer is a resounding no. In fact, it’s the opposite. We teach children that their "Black Belt focus" is a superpower they use in the classroom, not just on the mats.

In their first class, we’ll talk about keeping their eyes on the instructor and their ears open for directions. Because kids in the first-grade age range are expected to work independently for 15-20 minutes at a time in school, our martial arts drills reinforce that same stamina. We make "paying attention" a game they want to win.

5. Navigating Social Pressure and Building Confidence

The first class is often the first time a child has to perform a new skill in front of peers. This can be intimidating! That’s why our instructors are trained to use positive reinforcement. When a child finally lands a kick on a pad or remembers a specific stance, the whole class cheers.

This environment helps children build confidence without making them aggressive. They learn that it’s okay to be a beginner and that everyone starts at white belt. Seeing the motivational words like "Honor," "Loyalty," and "Bravery" on our walls reminds them that being a martial artist is about who you are on the inside.

6. The Instructor Connection

In the first class, your child will likely have a 1-on-1 moment with an instructor. We want to make sure they feel seen. Our instructors don't just bark orders; they get down on the child’s level, literally. Whether it's helping them adjust their sparring gloves or showing them how to sit properly on the mat, that personal connection is what makes the difference.

This mentorship is a core part of how we are shaping lives locally. We aren't just teaching kicks; we’re helping you raise a resilient, respectful human being.

7. What You’ll Do as a Parent

While your child is on the mat, you won't be left out! We have a comfortable seating area where you can watch the entire process. We encourage you to observe how your child reacts to the structure. You’ll see them start to stand a little taller and move with a little more purpose, even in just 45 minutes.

Actionable Tips for Parents during the first class:

  • Stay Positive: Give them a thumbs up if they look back at you.

  • Let the Instructor Lead: It’s tempting to shout instructions from the sidelines, but letting the Sensei handle the coaching helps the child build independence.

  • Take Photos: This is a big milestone! We love seeing parents capture that first "bow."

8. The "After-Class" Moment

When the class ends, we always wrap up with a group huddle or a final bow. This is often when we recognize "small wins." Did your child try their best? Did they listen? That’s what matters most.

Before you head home, we’ll usually chat with you about how your child felt. Did they have fun? Did they feel challenged? This is the perfect time to look into our category of all products if you’re ready to get their first official uniform and start their journey toward Black Belt.

9. Preparing for the Future

Martial arts is a marathon, not a sprint. The first class is just the "discovery" phase. Over the next few weeks, you’ll start to see the key skills every martial artist should master begin to take root. You’ll notice them using "Yes, Sir" or "Yes, Ma'am" at home, or perhaps they’ll show more empathy toward their siblings: a social-emotional skill that is a huge focus for children in the 1st-grade development phase.
